Moving into a beautiful Victorian house is a dream, and I was lucky enough to find one with a fairly new sturdy kitchen. At first, it seemed perfect, boasting ample storage and cupboard space. However, the style didn't resonate with me. Luckily, the strong quality of the materials meant I could focus on decor and paint rather than a major renovation. Here's how I transformed my kitchen into a stunning space that truly reflects my style!
Choosing the Right Paint
For the cupboards, I opted for Rust-Oleum kitchen cupboard paint in a rich dark green for most of the units and an off white for the few top cupboards. This color choice added both depth and sophistication, perfectly complementing the metallic accents and beautifully highlighting the stunning back tiles.
Using a well priced paint sprayer from B&Q made the application process quick and effortless. After taping around the edges to create clean lines, the spray provided an even finish that brushing simply could not achieve. Painting the cupboards with this tool resulted in a smooth, professional-quality look I was proud of. In fact, I completed the entire cupboard painting in just one afternoon, saving me hours compared to traditional methods.
Adding Classic Touches
To elevate the cupboard doors' appearance, I added beading from B&Q, creating a charming panelled effect reminiscent of vintage kitchens. This small detail transformed the aesthetics significantly. Additionally, I added trim to the tops of the cupboards, seamlessly joining them with the ceiling. This clever trick created a bespoke kitchen look and made the entire space feel cohesive and well-designed.
Tile Transformation
To match the refinished cupboards, I also updated the tiles. As they were all in great condition and not damaged I decided to reuse them. Using Rust-Oleum tile paint, I hand-painted marble veining effects throughout the room. This simple yet effective technique enhanced the overall elegance of the kitchen and provided a sophisticated backdrop that pairs beautifully with the green cabinets.
In addition to this, I replaced the old door handles and knobs. After filling the previous holes and sanding them down, I painted the surfaces for a fresh look. I then opted for stylish brass hardware from Meraki that truly enhance the kitchen's aesthetic.
Golden Accents
One of the highlights of this kitchen revamp is the custom worktop. I used gold leaf to gild the surface, creating a stunning focal point that harmonizes with the brass handles. To protect it, I sealed the surface with high-gloss resin, ensuring both beauty and functionality. This bounces light perfectly around the room , leaving no corner looking dull and forgotten.
Continuing with the golden theme, I gilded the back wall of the kitchen entrance. Slightly aging the gold during this process added a quaint touch, giving the space a vintage feel that complements the modern aspects. Sealing it with a varnish ensured durability and shine.
A Personal Touch on Home Design
This kitchen and diner transformation reflects my tastes and lifestyle beautifully. By selecting the right colors, adding classic details, and focusing on unique embellishments, I managed to revamp the space without major construction work. This approach saved me both time and money while allowing me to retain the kitchen's original charm, with the total project costing around £500. You can watch the whole process here.
